Ending ten-day-long suspense that almost threatened formation of the nascent ‘grand alliance’ of four Opposition parties,
Telangana Rashtra Samiti chief K. Chandrasekhar Rao on Saturday finally announced that he would stay with it, having worked out seat-sharing arrangement with Telugu Desam.
Mr. Rao drove down to TDP president N. Chandrababu Naidu’s residence along with senior leaders to make the announcement at a joint press conference amid chants of “Jai Telangana” by his supporters.
Going by their body language, both leaders seemed to have resolved to bury the hatchet, come to a workable understanding over the contentious issue of seat-sharing and ensure that the ‘grand alliance’ worked perfectly.

Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) president K Chandrasekhar Rao’s flip-flop was on full display on Friday when he rubbed his shoulders with the leaders of the TDP-Left combine just a day after holding talks with the Prajarajyam Party headed by Chiranjeevi, and dropping enough hints of sailing with the actor-turned-politician.
However, the very next day, he was back with the TDP again. The Prajarajyam Party apparently offered the TRS 60 assembly seats and 10 Lok Sabha seats.
The TRS chief held talks with the TDP-Left on seat-sharing. But he walked away just a week ago not satisfied with the seats offered by the TDP. He even went public saying that TRS was no beggar to accept crumbs after the TDP offered him seven Lok Sabha and 40 assembly seats.
The reason offered by KCR for his flip-flop was that a survey conducted by his party had indicated that his party men were overwhelmingly in favour of an alliance with the TDP-Left combine. TRS leader K Rama Rao told the media on Friday that the opinion elicited from 3,000 party workers through an SMS survey indicated that 42 per cent favoured the TRS going with the TDP-Left, 31 per cent with PRP, 18 per cent voted for a tie up with the BJP, 5 per cent wanted the party to go it alone while 4 per cent remained undecided.

After a flip-flop, Telangana Rashtra Samiti has indicated on Friday evening that it was close to firming seat sharing arrangement with Telugu Desam for the coming Assembly and Lok Sabha elections and it would indeed stay with ‘grand alliance’.
Sources in both TRS and TDP indicated that a broad understanding has been reached between them, under which the former could contest nine Lok Sabha and 45 Assembly constituencies. Barring a last minute hitch, an announcement is likely to be made at 12 noon on Saturday, Vasanta Panchami, treated as auspicious.
The breakthrough that eluded both parties for some days now, came on Friday evening following several rounds of hectic day-long consultations both within the two parties and then with one another mostly through telephone and mobile.

Actor-turned-politician Nandamuri Balakrishna on Thursday kicked off his campaign for the Telugu Desam Party taking pains to refresh people’s memory of his father N. T. Rama Rao by raising the issue of self-respect of Telugus.
With Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy naming just about any and every programme after the Gandhi family, the Telugus’ self-respect was being pawned in the corridors of power in New Delhi, he said, urging people to use their vote and show the door to the “corrupt Congress government”. He recalled that it was NTR who fought for Telugus’ self-respect.
He struck a rapport with the masses instantly on his first roadshow here on Thursday. In company of his elder brother N. Harikrishna, he drew a huge response. He explained how TDP had achieved social justice by making ‘dalits’ as Assembly and Lok Sabha Speakers, ensured one-third quota for women in local bodies and set up a separate university for women, along with a slew of other measures.

Eleven candidates, including Finance Minister K. Rosaiah of Congress, filed their nomination papers for the Legislative Council elections from the Assembly constituency on Tuesday.
Of the 11, eight were from the Congress and three from the Telugu Desam Party. They submitted their nomination papers to the Legislature Secretary Raja Sadaram. All the 11 are likely to be elected unopposed as the number of vacancies are also the same. Surprisingly, the Congress did not field another candidate though the ruling party and its allies have almost sufficient strength in the Assembly to ensure the victory of nine candidates. This enabled the TDP to field three candidates and win all.
Apart from Mr. Rosaiah, the other Congress nominees are — Rudraraju Padmaraju, Peer Shabbir Ahmed, N. Rajalingam, K. Yadava Reddy, K. R. Amos, G. Thippeswamy and Singam Basavapunnaiah.
