NTP merges with PRP. Devender Goud Thursday merged with Chiranjeevi

The eight-month-old Nava Telangana Party led by former minister T. Devender Goud Thursday merged with film star Chiranjeevi’s Praja Rajyam.

Goud formally announced the merger of his party with Praja Rajyam in the presence of the actor-turned-politician.

Goud had floated the party in July last year after quitting the main opposition Telugu Desam Party (TDP) due to differences with the party leadership over the issue of separate statehood to the Telangana region.

Goud, who had recently announced an electoral understanding with Praja Rajyam, said he decided to merge with it as both the parties have common ideology.

“I formed Nava Telangana Party with an aim to achieve democratic Telangana state. Now that Praja Rajyam has included this in its agenda, we decided to merge our party with Praja Rajyam,” he said.

Goud, who served as home minister in the previous TDP government of Chandrababu Naidu, termed the merger as a “historic necessity”.

Chiranjeevi, who floated Praja Rajyam in August last year, announced that Goud would be the vice president of the party. He hoped that the development would make the party more stronger.

The popular actor said his party was not against bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh and promised that if voted to power it would facilitate formation of separate Telangana.

Goud was reportedly finding it difficult to run Nava Telangana Party as it had failed to create the kind of impact he expected before quitting TDP.

His efforts to strike an alliance with Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) and Bharatiya Janata Party had also not yielded desired results.

Goud had over two-decade long association with TDP and was enjoying the number two position in the party.

Though Naidu had constituted a committee to recommend the stand it should take on separate Telangana issue, Goud quit TDP alleging that it was anti-Telangana and floated his own outfit.

Taking a u-turn, TDP later backed the demand for separate Telangana and recently joined hands with TRS headed by K. Chandrasekhara Rao. Praja Rajyam Party chief Chiranjeevi welcomed NTP president T Devender Goud into his party and termed it a historic event.

Reiterating his party’s commitment for a Social Telangana, Chiranjeevi said the merger of NTP with his party was another step forward towards their victory in the ensuing elections.

Telangana Samithi going the Sena way?

Even as the Telangana issue continues to simmer, suspected Telangana Rastra Samiti (TRS) activists beat up a dozen people who had come for an interview at the Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd’s Ramachandrapuram unit on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

Medak district SP V C Sajjanar said that six persons were arrested in connection with the attack. They were later remanded in judicial custody.

TRS has been crying shrill about ‘outsiders’ taking jobs that were meant for locals and therefore, demanding the creation of a Telangana state to undo this injustice.

Sajjanar said trouble started after BHEL put out the list of candidates for the interview.

Locals and some BHEL employees went on a protest, saying the list was full of outsiders. Soon members of the local unit of Telangana Joint Action Committee joined the protest.

With the situation threatening to get out of control, the BHEL management cancelled the interviews and asked applicants to return to their homes. This, however, did not assuage the anger of the activists, who beat up few of the applicants, which included persons from Kerala,
Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh.

“They threatened to kill me if I came back for interview at a later date. I will not come back and look for jobs elsewhere,” said Ramana Murthy, an applicant from coastal Andhra.

Applicants from Tamil Nadu lodged a complaint with the Chennai police on their return.
