TRS hopes skyrocket with survey reports

The TRS appears to be in a jubilant mood over the survey reports which indicate a good chance for the NDA to come to power at the

Chandrababu Naidu dismisses exit polls as charade

With exit polls showing an edge to the Congress both in Andhra Pradesh and at the party-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) at the Centre, Telugu Desam Party (TDP) president N. Chandrababu Naidu on Thursday said the poll predictions by media are charade.

EC ban dampens ‘band baja’ mood

Even as the date for counting of votes gets nearer, political parties in Adilabad do not seem to be in a mood for making advance preparations for victory rallies in this instance.
The uncertainty in prediction of the outcome brought about by a close electoral contest and the Election Commission’s (EC) ban on rallies on [...]

YSR completes five years, confident of another term

YS Rajasekhara Reddy on Thursday became the first Andhra Pradesh chief minister to complete five years in office and was confident of a second successive term with the stage set for the counting of votes polled for the assembly and Lok Sabha elections.

All set for smooth counting: CEO

The Election Commission had taken all precautions, including security arrangements, to ensure a smooth counting process on May 16, said Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) IV Subba Rao.

Represenatitves of political parties had assured the EC of their cooperation, he added. In this context he made it clear that counting would begin at 8:30 am (and not 8:00 am).

Representatives of the Congress, TDP, CPI, CPM, BJP, TRS and three other parties participated in the meeting convened by the CEO at the Secretariat here today. The representatives, who included K Vijayarama Rao and K Ravindra Kumar of the TDP, A Kamalakar Rao and G Niranjan (Congress), M Srinivas Reddy (TRS), Y Venkateshwara Rao (CPM), Chada Venkat Reddy (CPI), K Laxman (BJP) and others urged the CEO to allow victory processions with some restrictions after completion of counting. Talking to newsmen later, Subba Rao said he would confer with senior police officials on the matter.

Earlier, the Election Commission had decided not to allow any type of celebration or victory procession on the roads in order to avert untoward incidents or inconvenience to the people. On the counting procedures, the CEO said the poll personnel concerned would start bringing out the EVM control units from strongrooms at 8:00 am (on May 16) in the presence of counting agents, EC observers and others concerned. After placing the EVMs on the tables, candidate-wise totals and number of votes polled would be displayed on the EVM one after the other with a gap of eight to nine seconds to enable the agents to record the figures.

As Election 2009 comes to a close, political manoeuvrings begin. Backstage may shape Andhra’s new political act

The curtains are all set to rise on a new government on May 16 but in Andhra Pradesh, all action is unfolding backstage.

The race for Andhra Pradesh’s Chief Ministerial post is now getting closer to the finish line with the triangular fight between Chief Minister YSR Reddy, Chandrababu Naidu and megastar Chiranjeevi getting exciting.

With the possibility of a hung assembly staring in their face, political parties are now going all out to woo allies.

While the BJP seems to have got a shot in the arm with Teangana Rashtra Samiti head K Chandreshakar Rao extending his party’s support to the NDA, the BJP is now trying to win back their former ally TDP supremo Chandrababu Naidu.

Net advantage for Cong in Lok Sabha, YSR may be back

Exit polls by national TV channels in effect predicted that TDP’s Chandrababu Naidu had been done in by Chiranjeevi’s Prajarajyam,
leading to gains for Y S Rajasekhara Reddy’s Congress. They also foresaw that Congress would be kept in check - somewhat - in the Assembly polls but was well set to bag the lion’s share [...]

3 days to ‘Verdict 2009’; Cong, BJP scramble for allies

With less than a week to go before the ‘Verdict 2009’ is out, political parties, especially the Congress and the BJP, are involved in a scramble to woo as many allies as possible before May 16 to cobble up the required numbers to stake claim to form the next government at the Centre.
Along with the struggle to win over new allies, both the leading national parties are also leaving no stone unturned in keeping their existing alliances – the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) and the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) – intact.

Everyone in the political circle is expecting nothing more than a hung verdict and that makes the struggle to put together the numbers interesting.

Chiranjeevi keeps Cong & TDP guessing

With the political situation in Andhra Pradesh getting more complex after the TRS’ decision to side with the NDA, TDP and Congress are

Chiru sees PRP as a major force in national politics

Prajarajyam president K Chiranjeevi claimed his party would emerge as a major force in national politics after May
16.

Speaking to the media on Monday, the PRP chief reiterated that the party would win more than half of the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the state and secure nothing less than 160 seats in the Assembly. He said Prajarajyam party has been in talks with other parties only at the secondary level and the real scenario would emerge only after the results.

Chiranjeevi said the party would hold talks at the top-level only after the numbers are revealed. “We are certain of PRP’s importance at the national level. We will take up all necessary steps once the results are out. If we get the required numbers, we start negotiations with like-minded parties who are keen on forming the fourth front,” he said.

Telangana Samithi going the Sena way?

Even as the Telangana issue continues to simmer, suspected Telangana Rastra Samiti (TRS) activists beat up a dozen people who had come for an interview at the Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd’s Ramachandrapuram unit on the outskirts of Hyderabad.

Medak district SP V C Sajjanar said that six persons were arrested in connection with the attack. They were later remanded in judicial custody.

TRS has been crying shrill about ‘outsiders’ taking jobs that were meant for locals and therefore, demanding the creation of a Telangana state to undo this injustice.

Sajjanar said trouble started after BHEL put out the list of candidates for the interview.

Locals and some BHEL employees went on a protest, saying the list was full of outsiders. Soon members of the local unit of Telangana Joint Action Committee joined the protest.

With the situation threatening to get out of control, the BHEL management cancelled the interviews and asked applicants to return to their homes. This, however, did not assuage the anger of the activists, who beat up few of the applicants, which included persons from Kerala,
Tamil Nadu and coastal Andhra Pradesh.

“They threatened to kill me if I came back for interview at a later date. I will not come back and look for jobs elsewhere,” said Ramana Murthy, an applicant from coastal Andhra.

Applicants from Tamil Nadu lodged a complaint with the Chennai police on their return.
